I first came across Papaveraceae family while reading Farrington’s clinical Materia Medica. The manner in which the author analysed every remedy of the family and then clinically differentiated it with other remedies fascinated me to understand and apply it in practice.
The following is a case of a 40 year old female who saw me for hypertension and migraine. Her headache originated from the occipital region extending to her right eye. She described her pain as hell like. She had to resort to painkillers for relief. Her headache was so intense that she felt she would pass into a comatose state followed by that she would fall asleep. The pain was almost a torture for her, she quoted, ‘As if many people are killing me. There’s so much pain, I can’t even describe’. During headache, she often had a dream of dying. She feels extremely painful while seeing the dream.
Her Blood pressure ranged 170/80 mm Hg previously.
She described herself as an extremely sensitive person affected by smallest things. Her husband being an alcoholic, she was always troubled by him. She was unable to tolerate his temper tantrums and alcoholism. He was also a chain smoker, very careless and selfish by nature. She disliked him smoking in front of children and it annoyed her a lot. One day in a fit of anger, she took a lit up cigarette and shoved it in him mouth. She had kept telling him for a while to quit and he wasn’t listening to her. She wanted him to experience the pain she felt within.
She was a giving person by nature. She liked helping people out of the way. She was sensitive to the suffering of others and could not see them in pain. When asked about her fears she said she was not scared of anything in particular, the only thing she was afraid of was injuries and injections. She said she could not tolerate pain, her pain threshold was very low.
She had dreams of falling. In her dream, she was scared. Another dream was of death. She experiences lot of pain in the dream. She felt once she died she will be finally relieved of all the pain. She was also sensitive to cruelty, pain and suffering of people.

Some of the lesser known remedies from the family; guiding indications of Different remedies in the Above Family
Alkaloid from decomposition of Morphine by Hydrochloric Acid. Apomorphine contains the emetic properties of Opium. The main clinical keynote of the remedy is Morning sickness with salivation. The chief power of this drug lies in the speedy and effective vomiting that it produces, which becomes a strong guiding symptom to its homeopathic use. It causes very rapid vomiting, most rapid when injected subcutaneously. Vomiting without previous nausea.
Alcoholism with constant nausea, constipation and insomnia. Drowsiness. Faintness.
Codeine phosphoricum. Codeine sulphuricum. Alkaloid from Opium.

Morphine bears a similar relation to opium as atropine is to belladonna, that is, it represents its nervous side. It is less stimulating, less convulsive and more decidedly hypnotic. Constipates less and affects contractility of the bladder more.
It is clinically a very important remedy for Vertigo
Where especially vertigo aggravates slightest motion of head, even after eating and drinking , there is feeling if suddenly fainting with great anxiety, along with feeling of restless internally. One of the important concomitant – Constipation; stools large, dry, knotty, with tendency to bruise and fissure.

Williard Peirce Plains talks on materia medica –
Rawness of the posterior nares, burning and rawness in the larynx, with hoarseness and rawness and soreness behind the sternum at the bifurcation of the bronchi, with violent convulsive cough, which causes additional rawness, and expectoration of thick yellow, or bloody mucus.
