Approaching Acutes in Homeopathy

Author: Dr. Gajanan Dhanipkar, M.D. (Hom), Consultant and Faculty, the other song

The art of Homoeopathy lies entirely in understanding the patient, and a good case-taking forms a bedrock to it.  There are many aspects which form the basis of a good case-taking, and the most fundamental requirement from the homeopath is an unprejudiced observation.  One question that haunts many a senior homoeopath is how to go into the experience of the patient. How does one choose the entry point to enter deeper towards experience of the patient? How does one know if the patient’s expressions are temporary or are they fundamental to the patient? Is it important to find out what is holistic to the case, to see the common theme in patient’s expressions?

Case of Dengue with Rash

A 10-year-old female, brought in by his parents, was consulted by Dr. Gajanan Dhanipkar for high grade fever with chills on 21st September, 2014. The patient presented with redness of face and his body temperature measured orally was 103.40 F. The fever was constant over the past 3 days. With this the patient also complained of itching skin and pain in the shoulders. Her appetite had increased during fever. Mentally she felt very dull and wanted to sleep all the time.

The other concomitants observed for the case were dryness of lips, thirst for cold water and profuse lachrymation. On examination she had rash on her palms with papular eruptions. There was no perspiration at all during any stage of fever. The patient was in a lot of distress when awake and was better when soothed by her parents that she would soon be alright.

The paediatrician diagnosed her as having dengue based on physical examination and investigations and advised that she be hospitalized immediately. The parents who were keen followers of Homoeopathy, decided to wait and consult their homoeopath instead.
